QuestionWhere can a custom Central Body (.cb) file be saved?
Answer
Note: Refer to the Technical Notes for Central Bodies help topic for background information regarding central body files.

Edits to a central body file should be made to a copy of the installed file, which must be saved in one of three specific locations. STK reads central body files in top-down order at locations listed in the table below and will use the last one that it finds. Note that a .cb file is contained in a folder with other files that it references; its parent, container folder (of the same name) is what should be moved. For example, the central body file "Alderaan.cb" will exist in a folder named "Alderaan", and you will need to copy that entire folder to properly move the Alderaan central body.

Table 1 - Valid Central Body File Locations
Folder NameDefault LocationDescription
STK Installation FolderC:\Program Files\AGI\STK <Version #>\STKData\CentralBodies\<Name>This folder is in a write-protected area. The central body files here are the default for all STK users on the computer. AGI recommends that you never alter the installed version of a central body file.
STK User FolderC:\Users\<username>\Documents\STK <Version #>\Config\CentralBodies\<Name>The central body files here become the default versions for the specific user whose folder contains them.
STK Scenario FolderC:\Users\<username>\Documents\STK <Version #>\<ScenarioFolder>\CentralBodies\<Name>The central body files here are only used by the specific scenario that contains them.

To verify that STK is using the central body file that you want, make your copy and then restart STK.
  • If the folder, filename, and name line within the file (line 3) are all identical, you should see your central body in STK in any of the places where STK references central bodies
  • If you have Astrogator and you have saved your central body file in the STK Installation or STK User folder, you can look it up in the Component Browser (Utilities Menu > Component Browser) and see if the Component Path value at the bottom is what you expect.
  • If you used a scenario folder, open that scenario in STK. Select the scenario object in the Object Browser and, in the Report & Graph Manager, run the Installed Style "External Files By Filename". Locate your central body in that report and verify that the path is the one in the scenario folder.
