QuestionIs there an alternative to the Ansys License Manager (ALM)?
Answer
Overview and download:
The Ansys Enterprise License Manager (AELM) is not packaged with other Ansys installations, so you must download it separately. Be sure to pick the correct Windows or Linux option. AELM is a minimum FlexLM file set that you can run at the command line or with an existing FlexLM Server Configuration. Both download sites below require a web account to download.

1) Ansys Customer Portal > Download Center > Tools > Ansys Enterprise License Manager
https://download.ansys.com/Current%20Release#
2) AGI > Downloads > Ansys tab > Ansys Enterprise License Manager
https://support.agi.com/downloads/7/#ansys

Steps to set up AELM on Windows

1) Download and unzip the file, which normally would be in <Downloads>\Enterprise_KA\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_WINX64\.

Read the following two documents included within AELM download.
<Download_folder>\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_WINX64\ansys_license_management_guide.pdf (referred to as Ansys Doc)
<Download_folder>\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_WINX64\ansyslm_winx64\Shared Files\licensing\licadmin\docu\fnp_LicAdmin.pdf" (referred to as Flex Doc)

2) Optional cleanup: If you are not planning to use a dongle, you can delete this folder from the download. <Download folder>\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_WINX64\ansyslm_winx64\Shared Files\bin.

3) Here are steps for uninstalling the existing Ansys License Manager (ALM).
• Before installing AELM, you must first remove any existing ALM version on your computer.
• ALM does not have its own entry in Windows > Apps and Programs. See Ansys Doc section Uninstalling the Ansys License Manager for steps to manually remove it.
• Optional: Contact Technical Support for a Powershell 7 script that automates the removal of the ALM.

4) Run lmgrd.exe. Use one of the following three methods.

a) Run lmgrd.exe directly on a command line.
• Run directly to test syntax, but know that this is limited because it doesn't restart when your system restarts.
• See the Flex Doc section 'lmgrd Command-Line Syntax' and 'Manual Start from the Command Line'.
• Open a Windows Command Prompt or PowerShell.
• Change directory (CD) to the following path:
<Download_folder>\Enterprise_KA\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_WINX64\ansyslm_winx64\Shared Files\licensing\winx64
• As an option, you can run .\lmgrd.exe alone to see the usage defining the parameters in the command window.
• Note: The first time you run the complete command, you may be prompted to "Allow the exe through the firewall".
• Use the Windows Task Manager > Details tab to locate and stop the lmgrd.exe process or run the -x lmdown parameter.

    b) LMTools.exe: This is a UI program for installing and managing a FlexNet as a Windows Service.
•  Ansys/AGI doesn't provide it, but you can use it to drive the AELM.
•  LMTools is designed to support more than one Vender application, so you can use it from any vendor folder location.
•  LMTools will create Windows Service, which auto starts with system, so you run once and you are done.
•  See the Flex doc section 'Configuring the License Server Manager as a Windows Service'.

    c) Installs.exe: This is a command line program to install FlexNet as a Windows Service.
• Open a Windows Command Prompt or PowerShell as an Administrator.
• CD to <Download_folder>\Enterprise_KA\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_WINX64\ansyslm_winx64\Shared Files\licensing\winx64
• Run .\Installs.exe alone and you will see the usage defining required inputs.
• TIP: Hold SHIFT and right-click a file select 'Copy As Path'; this captures the entire path in quotes. Then pass this as input.
• Note: For the -l option, you can use anyname.log. The file shouldn't exist; it will be created when you run the command.
• After .\Installs.exe succeeds, Open (op) the Windows Services App. You must run this as Admin.
• Make sure the new service is set to Automatic; then start it.

Steps to set up AELM on Linux

1) Download and extract the file, which normally would be in <Downloads>\Enterprise_KA\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_LINX64.tgz\.

Ree the following two documents included within the AELM download.
<Download_folder>\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_LINX64.tgz\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_LINX64.tar\\ansys_license_management_guide.pdf (referred to as Ansys Doc)
<Download_folder>\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_LINX64.tgz\ENTERPRISELICENSING_2024R1_LINX64.tar\ansyslm_linx64.tgz\ansyslm_linx64.tar\shared_files\licensing\lic_admin\docu\fnp_LicAdmin.pdf" (referred to as Flex Doc)

2) See the Ansys Doc sections below for an overview.

Start the Ansys License Manager at System Boot Time

3) Run lmgrd.exe directly to test and verify syntax
• Change directory (CD) to the location of lmgrd.exe.
• As an option, you can run .\lmgrd.exe alone to see the usage defining the parameters.

4) Move your working command into the Linux startup script; see systemd in both Ansys and Flex docs.
