Increase the Render Speed of EOIR
This article is a guide to configuring the EOIR capability of the STK application to run faster and smoother, avoiding long render times.
How do I get EOIR to render faster?

The Ansys Systems Tool Kit® (STK®) application has a powerful EOIR capability. It enables you to model the detection, tracking, and imaging performance of electro-optical and infrared sensors. Its applications are wide, but it can often incur long runtimes when capturing images or videos, especially if your sensor image contains a large amount of data.

The following methods can reduce the complexity in your system enough that it will speed up EOIR's runtime during analysis, though each of these methods may cost your system some fidelity.

1. Modify system parameters

Reducing parameters like pixel density and step size will reduce computational load on a scene. More pixels mean more data that EOIR takes in. You can easily do this by adjusting your EOIR sensor's properties.

2. Adjusting 3D models

If you are imaging objects represented by custom 3D models, this can drastically increase the computational load of EOIR. Models with high vertex counts or extremely high resolutions can slow down the EOIR tool considerably. An easy way to get around this in Blender, an open-source 3D modelling software, is to use the Decimate modifier. You can use it to simplify a mesh and reduce the geometry of the 3D model without losing detail.

Reducing resolution in your custom 3D model, or simply avoiding the use of custom models if they are not necessary, will surely speed up EOIR's computations.

3. Reducing spatial oversampling

Reducing the spatial oversampling of your EOIR scene is another dependable way to decrease render time. However, this is at the cost of easily finding small, subpixel objects in a scene. You can adjust this setting through the user-level environment variable in Windows.

You can create an environment variable named "AGI_EOIR_SENSOR_OSF" and set it to one of these values: 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, or 32x. Smaller values will result in faster processing speeds but lower-fidelity spatial simulation and also artificial spatial artifacts. Larger values will result in slower processing speeds but higher-fidelity spatial simulation and reduced spatial artifacts.

The default value is 4x, so you can increase EOIR speed by changing it to 2x or 1x.

For STK versions 13.0 and later, you can quickly toggle EOIR to use an OSF value of 1x by going to the Sensor object's Basic - Definition properties page and selecting the Minimize OSF check box.

For additional information, see the Over Sample Factor Settings section of the EOIR Sensor Properties page in the STK Help.
